About the Vision

On 3 October 2017 Rebecca Evans AM made an important statement in the Senedd in which she set out Welsh Government's specific requirements for Sport Wales.  

The 3 October statement followed a Review of Sport Wales which was published during the summer of 2017 and included recommendations that Sport Wales engages with external stakeholders to take account of their views.  

Sport Wales has welcomed both the Review and the statement from Welsh Government. The discussion on the future vision for sport is for everyone. It's important that the vision is created and owned by us all.  

What will it involve?

The conversation on the future of sport in Wales will:

  • Listen to people's ideas for a new vision for sport across our country
  • Engage a wide range of stakeholders and partners
  • Take account of what we already know - for instance what our partners have told us and the statistics we hold
  • Ensure the future vision is aligned to Welsh Government policy as set out in Prosperity for All and relevant legislation including the Well-being and Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015
  • From the vision, we will also shape a new strategy for Sport Wales so that our organisation is focused on delivering our part of the new vision.

Why is this important?

There are wide variations in the numbers of people participating in sport.

More men play sport than women. The same is true of boys vs girls. Disabled people, BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) communities and people living in areas of deprivation also tend to play significantly less sport than other people. It's time that changed.

We must address the barriers that prevent people from playing sport. People have told us that there are several factors including being too busy at work, feeling too old, not feeling fit enough to take part, having too many family commitments, the cost and the availability of facilities.

There are many great reasons for playing sport - it's fun, it's sociable, it's rewarding. It's also proven to be good for your health. People who play sport frequently are generally fitter and healthier than people who are inactive.

Sedentary lifestyles are leading to more and more of our population living with lifestyle diseases such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Being active also helps people's mental wellbeing. Sport is good for you.

Here are three things we really need to change:

1. More people playing sport - for their own enjoyment and so that as a nation we are fitter and healthier. Currently only half of us are being active regularly.

2. Making sure everyone has the chance to be active -  Some groups of people including disabled people, BME communities and people living in deprived areas face barriers which mean they participate in less sport than other people.

3. Helping everyone achieve their potential in sport -  If we are to continue to develop a nation of winners, we must encourage more people to participate in sport. That way, more people will go on to win for Wales, and more of our winners will reflect our diversity as a nation.
